Join V&A curator Fuchsia Hart as she unboxes two spectacularly embroidered traditional Najdi thobes (dresses) from the Najd region of Saudi Arabia. Traditionally worn to celebrations such as weddings, Eid and family gatherings, these luxurious outer garments measure around 3-metres wide, making them some of the largest objects in the museum’s fashion collection. Complete with sequins and floral motifs in metal thread, the luxurious silk sleeves drape over the top of the head to create a spectacular flowing shape, revealing the exquisite details of the narrower dress worn underneath.
