In the war against the United States, Ms. Trinh Thi Ngo’s voice was a powerful weapon, affecting the spirit of American soldiers.

Since 1955, Ms. Ngo has been assigned as a member of the English program for American soldiers who are participating in the war in Vietnam with the name of Little Story with American soldiers, conducted by Voice of Vietnam in coordination with the Enemy Department (General Political Department of the Ministry of Defense). Radio sessions usually start at night, 5-6 minutes long, and there are two sessions per week. Later, the duration increased by a day of three sessions, each lasting 30 minutes.

Due to the difficult-to-read original name with English speakers, the announcer changed to Thu Huong – the name of her best friend, she later also used to give to her daughter. She always began with the words: “Hello unknown American soldiers, I am Thu Huong talking to you on the battlefield of Vietnam.” In an inanimate but serious voice, she mentioned the truth: “Welcome to Vietnam, only regret that all of you are going to death. You should not be here but to sit at home, with your lover, eat hamburgers and drink milk.”

Most American soldiers are listeners of the program to identify Trinh Thi Ngo possessing a voice that makes them “fate, remember, and afraid but still can not help but listen”. They gave her nickname Hanoi Hannah (Hannah of Hanoi).

Broadcaster Trinh Thi Ngo once said his job was to make the enemy realize that they were in an unjust war. “We just want our country to be free, so it’s better for U.S. soldiers not to be here,” she said.
