Designed to feel like a respite from the busy streets of Quezon City, interior designer Mara Manalo completely transformed this 35sqm apartment from an empty shell into a functional, cozy home by adding custom joinery and textured elements through-out. In particular, a bleached timber and plywood kitchen with cut-outs instead of handles for a less cluttered look. With an adjacent floor-to ceiling pantry and storage cabinet concealed behind a sliding polycarbonate door. Green floor tiles were added to the kitchen to separate it from the living space and make it easier to clean. A raised platform separates the sleeping area from the living spaces, and incorporates storage underneath as well as a room dividing counter that also serves as a work space. In a busy city like Manila, the home’s efficient, economical design and considered use of materials makes a small studio feel like a spacious, tranquil retreat.
