Inspired by traditional cooling strategies used across cultures for centuries, designer Rachel Farrington and architecture intern Maylis Vasseur looked to architectural traditions from India, Africa, ancient Persia, and South and Central America. Their research explored how evaporative cooling, porous clay, rainwater harvesting, prevailing breezes, thermal mass, and perforated screens have long been used to create comfortable spaces in hot climates. This project builds on those time-tested principles, combining unglazed terracotta breeze blocks, rainwater harvesting, evaporative cooling, solar power, and thoughtful design for a contemporary Texas setting.
