Above his Melbourne antique and local design shop, Ma House Supply Store, Ben Mooney has turned a 60sqm/646sqft rental apartment into a home filled with humour, history, and heart. Part home, part archive, the space reflects his lifelong love of antiques. Originally a tired apartment above a commercial lease, Mooney transformed it into a layered and lively home with ingenuity and patience. He removed walls and doors to open up light and space, hand-chipped the walls to reveal paint layers beneath, and built shelving into new beams for his ever-growing collection of objects. Every detail carries his signature mix of sentiment and wit — a door cut in half (and tuned upside down) to save space, curtains stitched from leftover tablecloths, and a kitchen pieced together from Marketplace finds. For Mooney, living beautifully isn’t about perfection or newness; it’s about curation, care, and the stories things hold.
